What Is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate healing within tissues. The light energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by cells, helping to increase cellular activity, improve blood flow, and reduce inflammation and pain.
Photobiomodulation is commonly used in veterinary medicine to support the management of a variety of conditions. It can be particularly beneficial for pets suffering from osteoarthritis (OA), where it helps reduce joint inflammation, ease pain, and improve mobility and comfort.
Laser therapy is also widely used to promote wound healing. By stimulating cell repair and encouraging better circulation, it can speed up healing in surgical incisions, traumatic wounds, and skin lesions while also helping to reduce swelling and discomfort.
Treatments are painless, quick, and generally well tolerated by patients. Depending on the condition being treated, pets may benefit from a series of sessions to achieve the best results.
Laser therapy is often used alongside other treatments as part of a comprehensive plan to improve your pet’s comfort, mobility, and quality of life. 🐾 healing

What Can K-Laser Be Used For?

Laser therapy is clinically proven on a wide range of conditions from head to toe either alone or in combination with other treatments/therapies.

Over many years of research the K-LASER team have developed hundreds of species & condition specific protocols. Each protocol is automatically adjusted according to the size, weight, skin colour of the patient and chronicity of injury.

At Minster Veterinary Centre we commonly treat;

  • Limbs/Joints/Degenerative Disorders
    Osteoarthritis
    IVD Disease
    Hip Dysplasia
    Elbow and Cruciate Disease
    Chronic Pain / Lameness
    Fractures and post-surgical rehab
    Tendonitis / Sprains / Strains
    Cervical Conditions
  • Mouth / Head
    Oral Diseases
    Aural Hematomas
    Post Dental Extractions
    Gingivitis
    Periodontitis
  • Dermatology
    Pododermatitis
    Pyoderma
    Dermatitis
    Post-surgical incisions
    Infected and Chronic wounds
    Lick Granulomas
  • Other / General Conditions
    Hematomas / Bruises
    Lymphangitis
    Oedema
    Westie Lung

🔬 How a Class 4 K‑Laser Works

🌟 1. Core Mechanism: Photobiomodulation (PBM)

Class 4 K‑Lasers use specific wavelengths of visible and near‑infrared light to stimulate cellular activity.

What happens inside the cell?

  • Light is absorbed by chromophores—especially cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria.
  • This absorption increases production of ATP, the cell’s energy currency.
  • More ATP = faster repair, improved cell function, and enhanced resilience.

Why this matters clinically

  • Damaged or inflamed tissues often have impaired mitochondrial function.
  • PBM helps “reboot” these cells, restoring normal metabolism and speeding recovery.

💡 2. High Power = Deep Penetration

Class 4 lasers operate above 500 mW, often delivering several watts of power.
This allows:

  • Deeper tissue penetration (muscles, tendons, joints, nerves)
  • Shorter treatment times (typically 3–5 minutes)
  • Larger treatment areas

K‑Laser devices can also modulate power output to suit superficial vs. deep structures.

🩺 3. Physiological Effects

Class 4 K‑Laser therapy produces a cascade of beneficial responses:

Cellular & metabolic

  • ↑ ATP production
  • ↑ Cell growth (fibroblasts, macrophages, endothelial cells)
  • ↑ Collagen synthesis

Circulatory

  • Vasodilation → increased blood flow
  • Improved oxygenation
  • Faster removal of inflammatory waste

Anti‑inflammatory

  • ↓ Pro‑inflammatory markers (e.g., PGE2)
  • ↓ Swelling and oedema

Analgesic

  • ↑ Endorphin release
  • Reduced nerve sensitivity

How Do The Appointments Work?

Appointments for laser therapy can be booked by contacting our reception team by phone. If you are unsure whether laser therapy is suitable for your pet, our veterinary team will be happy to discuss this with you and arrange an initial assessment if needed.

Treatment Plan for Arthritis

For pets with arthritis, we generally recommend an initial course of 6 sessions within the first 3 weeks to help achieve the best results. The most convenient schedule for most owners is two sessions per week during this initial phase.
After the first course of treatment, many patients benefit from ongoing maintenance sessions. Most pets cope well with weekly treatments long-term, although some patients maintain good comfort and mobility with sessions every other week.

What to Expect

Laser therapy sessions typically last around 30 minutes. The exact length of the session depends on the severity of your pet’s condition and how many joints are being treated.
The treatment is painless and relaxing for most pets, and many will happily lie or sit comfortably during their session.
If you would like to book laser therapy for your pet or would like further advice, please contact our team who will be happy to help.
